Journalist veteran and SKUP leader John Kristian Bones has died at the age of 69.

Journalist veteran and SKUP leader John Kristian Bones has died at the age of 69.

He passed away on Monday, May 13, after a long illness. Acting SKUP leader Jan Gunnar Furuly confirmed this to Medier24.

The family has been informed about Medier24’s coverage.

– Our thoughts and condolences go out to John’s family and relatives. There will be many who mourn the loss of an inspiring and good colleague with a burning passion for investigative journalism both in Norway and abroad, Furuly told Medier24.

– John has always been full of energy, optimism, and spark. He deserves much of the credit for making SKUP the world’s best investigative journalism conference, he said.

Bones had been the managing director of SKUP since 2016, but had been on sick leave in recent months. Furuly has been the acting SKUP leader since January.

Bones was open about being diagnosed with cancer and went on sick leave last year.

He worked at VG from 1993 to 2016, holding roles as journalist, head of the news desk, project manager, and department head.

Bones also has a background as a journalist and editorial manager at Adresseavisen.

Bones was born on September 7, 1954, in Trondheim. He leaves behind five adult children.
